Tango with Horses, Part 2:
The importance of Intention and Vulnerability on and off the dance floor.
One of the key mysterious ingredients to dancing Tango is having a clear and confident Intention. Often teachers ask their students what is it that the leader does to convey where and how he is going so that his follower can magically somehow follow? The answer is through his intention. This is a hard thing to sometimes describe as it is a non-visible and somewhat intangible action, but it’s the key to being a good leader.

Tango with Horses; lessons in Connection, Leadership and Presence.
I remember vividly my first ever Tango lesson, I was nervous as hell initially, but as soon as we started actually walking around the room with our leader, a big smile started to appear on my face. Not only had I overcome my fears and years of self-consciousness and was finally dancing a proper dance, but I was struck by this thought: “This is what I do with horses!”

A result of not being allowed to follow your instincts (Horse Wisdom Tip #1) and honour your emotions (Horse Wisdom Tip #2) when you were a small child results in being disconnected from your body.
Horses are very physical creatures and their size and strength alone demands that we are in our body when interacting with them.
So what does being in your body mean and feel like?
- You are continuously aware of your breath and bodily sensations in each moment
- Your focus is simultaneously on both your thinking mind and your feeling body
- You are present, aware but relaxed
- You feel grounded, calm and clear
- You can set boundaries and honour others’ boundaries calmly and firmly
- You can be spontaneous, playful and joyful
- You’re confident and positive in your attitude.
How to recognise then when you’re not in your body:
- Your attention is on your thoughts, racing mind, worries
- Your energy is in your head, often experienced as a buzzing or heaviness across the forehead
- You’re ungrounded – jumpy and easily startled by noises or movement
- You can’t access your heart and your true desires very easily
- You find decision making hard
- You’re being led by “shoulds, ought to’s, can’t, don’t,” etc
- Your thought patterns are negative and self-limiting.
Through feedback from horses responses when we’re around them we can notice just how connected or not we are to our own horse-body we walk around in each day.
For a horse to be out of his body is a serious issue, one that could mean life or death to him. And in a similar way, for humans to be disconnected from their body is a kind of death. As this means ultimately that we are disconnected from our soul and it’s path.
Equine Facilitated Learning brings us back into harmony with our body, soul and mind, leading over time to a calmer, more horse-like state of being.

Emotional Congruency or Emotional Intelligence have been buzz words for the past decade, yet so many people still fail to listen to their real feelings and act on them through fear of rejection from others and judgment.
Horses are emotional beings, fully connected to their instincts, needs and feelings all of the time.
Learning to listen to and follow your real feelings I believe is one of the single greatest acts of self-care and self-love we can give to ourselves.
And after all, how can we possibly expect others to treat us well and with respect if we are giving off mixed signals?
Horse show us, moment by moment whether we are being true to our feelings and when we override them through fear and a need for protection.
This overrriding creates a blockage in our internal energy system and is emitted out to the world through our energy field or aura.
Horses are one of the best teachers around for helping us learn this vital Life Skill. They come without any of the conditioning we humans receive, enabling them to honestly show us where we’re at.
